American Sign Language Club at ASU with the Ability Counts Tempe Club: Monday, April 4

Left to Right
Donna Leff, ASL Club Advisor
Rebecca Elderman, Treasurer
Michelle Rivas, President
Von Hillyard, Vice-President

The American Sign Language Club at Arizona State University collaborated with the Ability Counts Tempe Club on Monday for an event called, “What’s Your Ability?”

The gorgeous Arizona weather was a perfect accompaniment for the “What’s Your Ability?” event that featured different tables on Hayden Lawn of activities centered on simulating what it is like to have a disability.

The American Sign Language club hosted activities to raise awareness of their presence on both Tempe and Downtown Phoenix Campuses. Although their meetings are held in Downtown Phoenix, their club will host events aimed at both campuses.

The turnout of students interested in ASL club was promising and demonstrated the peaking interest in ASU’s Sign Language program, which is the third most popular language at ASU.

Overall, the What’s Your Ability event was a huge success. ASL club looks forward to future events on the Tempe Campus.

More information on the club can be found on their Facebook “Like” page.

New ASL Club is in the Downtown Devil News! Read the great article below...

New Sign language club kicks off on Downtown campus, directs efforts to expansion

Vaughn Hillyard and Michelle Rivas, leaders of the new American Sign Language Club on the Downtown campus, communicate with club adviser Donna Leff using sign language. (Stephanie Snyder/DD)

Downtown Devils. Com   Dated: Tuesday, February 22, 2011
The new American Sign Language Club held its first meeting Monday afternoon on the Downtown campus, and despite a low turnout, members discussed future plans for the club.

During the meeting, club President Michelle Rivas and Vice President Vaughn Hillyard laid out their goals for the new organization.

“We want the club to create an outlet for students at ASU that are interested in interacting with the deaf community, whether students know ASL or not,” Hillyard said.

Rivas, a sophomore at the Walter Cronkite School, started the club this semester after taking SHS 101, or American Sign Language I, in the fall.

“I had an interest in ASL, and I wanted to start something downtown,” she said.

Donna Leff, the ASL teacher for the Downtown campus, is now the ASL Club’s faculty adviser. Since Leff is deaf herself, she communicates with students through sign language.

Sign Language Tops German at U.S. Colleges!

American Sign Language is close to surpassing German as the third-most-studied foreign language at America's colleges and universities.

Only 4,500 more students study German than study ASL, and enrollment in classes for the gesture-based language used by the deaf increased 16 percent since the previous survey three years ago.
